I have been a Drama Director twice this year. One day this script just popped out and it was deep, just like I wanted.
A couple of years ago, I experienced a short period of depression. I know what it is like to undergo pain and [to] feel powerlessness. I was always looking for a story that could lead my audience through the pain that I had experienced so that they would cherish every moment of happiness in their lives.
My actors, like most young people today, had never undergone depression. It was hard for them to enter the characters and act out the sadness. Luckily, I had such experiences and could teach them how to act. Combined with the actors’ imagination, these feelings could be presented to the audience as something that bears root in real life.
Through this story [the script], I could pass my message to the audience, bring them into self-reflection, and make them understand that they should not comfort depressed people by saying ‘I know what it feels like’ when they are unaware of what the person had been through.
